Football Signings Come Up Short
By C. Edward Wilson
Moving on and separating themselves
Unless there are multiple late signings of high school senior football players on Wednesday night, then the prospects of many athletes going off to college from the Savannah area have fallen real short. Wednesday, Feb. 1st, was the National Signing Day and not too many players from the area did so. After Camden County and Statesboro, the Division-I prospective signees looked really slim, while the I-AA looked pretty good for Georgia Southern and Savannah State.
At first glance, it looks like there were not enough talented athletes in the Chatham County area to warrant either a first or second look from college coaches. One of the main reasons wasn’t on the athletic field, but on the academic playing field.
With the increased scoring added to the SAT scores, many of the athletes couldn’t make the adjustment to the writing section of the test. What may improve the situation will be the two year wait for players to come from the Junior College ranks.
One of the best players in the area was running back Robert Thomas from Brunswick. He ran through, over and out-raced defenders from the past three years, but he couldn’t run from his responsibilities in the classroom.
Windsor Forest linebacker Freddie Green was heavily recruited by Coastal Carolina, but opted to go to perennial Division-II program Albany State University.
Groves High defensive back Quareeb Jenkins is headed to Savannah State University. He joins Jenkins High punter and wide receiver Jerome Temple.
Daniel Alexander of Groves will continue his career as a punter at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. Gallaudet is a school for the hearing impaired. It is the school that originally started what today is called the “huddle.” Players would gather around one person and that individual would give the plays out in sign language. They would then break the huddle and  wait for a large drum to bang after 25 seconds and then the center would hike the football to the coach.

Basketball playoffs
The real basketball season begins this weekend as teams prepare for the sub-region Georgia High School Athletic Association end of season tournaments.
One of the surprise teams is Saint Vincent’s Academy. The Lady Saints head into the tournament on a seven game winning streak and the irony of it all is that they only have seven players. The rest of the players are either banged up or recovering from injuries.
Teams at the top of the division will get a bye and get an automatic seeding in the state playoffs the following weekend.

WINTERNATIONALS AT OGLETHORPE SPEEDWAY BEGINS THURSDAY

By Katherine Adams
The 5th Annual Winternationals at Oglethorpe Speedway Park is set to begin this Thursday night with an open practice.  Drivers from twenty-five states and one Canadian province are registered to compete during the three day competition.  Crate Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Championship Modified Tour, 440 Cars will compete on Friday and Saturday night while the weekend will culminate with the 2nd Annual Coca-Cola Young Guns Shoot-Out presented by Stock Car and Circle Track Magazines along with Sport Clips.  A total of 12 feature races will take place over the two nights of racing action.
A record one hundred and five drivers are currently registered for the 2nd Annual Coca-Cola Young Guns race.  Professional race team talent scouts and development program coordinators will have the opportunity to witness the young men and women in action during a pair of 25-lap feature races on Saturday night.  Drivers aged 23 and younger will compete in late model and open wheel modified feature events.  They may also participate in Friday afternoon's Young Guns seminars covering a number of topics that will help develop young careers in motorsports.
Veteran and young guns will be racing hard on Friday and Saturday night as the Crate Late Models will battle for a $1500 to win on Friday night and $2000 Saturday night.  There is also a large number of drivers competing for the Winternationals title in the IMCA Modifieds and Championship Modified Tour races both nights along with a large contingent of local competition in the Mini Stocks and 440 Cars.
"There is a lot of racing planned for both nights," explained promoter Ted Austad.  "Fans are going to get their money's worth with adults tickets priced at only $15."
Local hot shoe and 2005 late model champion, Robert Diekemper, clean swept the crate late model action last year at the Winternationals.  The 20-year-old skipped out on the Young Guns race last year, but will run all three races this year.
"We don't want to miss out on the opportunity to get in front of the scouts," said Diekemper.  "I sure hope we have the same kind of weekend we had last year during this special OSP race event."
Defending Young Guns late model champion Bodine Massengill from Jacksonville, Florida will be back to defend his title along with Iowa's Zak VanderBeek who won the open wheel modified division title in 2005.  Massengill hot lapped at OSP this past week reaching numbers in the low nineteens.  The team felt it could get lower with better track conditions in the evening.
"The track was dry and did not have a lot of bite," said Bodine's father Jeff.  "Andy (Stone) will have the track perfect for this weekend.  We will be faster."
IMCA Modified drivers from the Midwest are making their first trip to the historic half mile to compete in a pair of races on Friday and Saturday night.  The economical racing division has a strong following in the Midwest and is growing in numbers for the southeast with tracks running weekly programs in the Carolinas.
"We are excited at being a part of the winter tradition growing at Oglethorpe Speedway," said IMCA's Brett Root.  "The Stone's have a great program and promoter Ted Austad has always been a strong supporter of IMCA racing."
Race fans can enjoy a sneak peek preview of the weekend's cars and stars with an open practice scheduled for Thursday night.  Grandstand admission is free with practice beginning at 6:30pm.
The Friday night program kicks off with a full slate of racing.  Hot laps will crank up at 5:30pm with racing set for 7:30pm in the Crate Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stock, Championship Modified Tour and 440 Cars.  There will also be preview session for each of the Young Guns Modifieds and Young Guns Late Models.
Saturday's program cranks up early with hot laps set for 4:00pm.  Qualifying for the Young Guns is at 6:00pm with racing at 7:30pm.  All of Friday's divisions will see action for the second straight night in addition to the main events for the Young Gun Late Model and Young Gun Modifieds.
Adult tickets are only $15 on Friday and Saturday night with a full weekend reserved ticket available for only $25.  Children 12 and under will be admitted for $5 on Friday and Saturday night.  Tickets and additional information are available by calling the OSP offices at 912-964-8200 or by visiting the speedway's website at www.ospracing.net.  A full list of drivers entered for the Coca-Cola Young Guns Shoot-Out can be found at the speedway's website.

DOUBLE FEATURES CREATE DOUBLE HEADACHES FOR SOME AT OSP

By Katherine Adams

The double feature format this past Saturday for the Go Kart Winter Shoot-Out Series at Oglethorpe Speedway Park created some headaches for some drivers.  Joseph Diekemper saw his points lead go away for the first time this season in the Rookie II division.  The same was true for Carl Bobst in the Stock Medium division.  It is the first time in a year and half that Bobst will not be the points leader for the Stock Medium.
Rincon's Tyler Perry seemed to be the man on the mission for the past few Go Kart Winter Shoot-Out dates.  Perry has been chasing Joseph Diekemper of Bloomingdale since the season opener in November.  On the strength of his first and second place finishes , Perry overtook Diekemper and now leads the Rookie II division by two points going into the final two races of the season at the end of February.  Pooler's Casey Coker won the second round Saturday afternoon after Perry won the first of two features.  Lance Razook also nailed down a top three with a runner-up finish to Perry in the day's first feature race.
Andrew Ryan and KA Warnock split the feature races for the Stock Medium.  Warnock finished second to Ryan in the first feature while George Meador was third.  Warnock was handed the second round win after post race technical inspection disqualified Junior Morris from the top spot.  Meador moved into second with Tim Broschard third.  Broschard passed Carl Bobst in the point standings after the defending champion struggled to eighth and fifth place finishes on Saturday.
Pembroke's Cliff Hudson picked up another victory on Saturday winning the first of two feature races for the Rookie I division.  Austin Pitts from Savannah was the winner of the second feature race for the youngsters.  Michael Kessel continues to lead the points over Guyton's David Whitten III.
Rincon's Tyler Sherrod ran first and second in the double mains for the Junior Unrestricted class.  CC Warnock was the winner of the second round after finishing fifth in the first race.  Destiny Dalton nailed down a second and third place finish Saturday while showing off for the WTOC-TV cameras who are preparing a story about her this week.
Other winners on Saturday included Eddie Morris with a clean sweep in the Stock Light division.  Chris Lewis also swept the racing action in the Stock Heavy division while two teenagers stole the laurels from the big boys in the Outlaws.  Thirteen-year-old Casey Lee picked up the first feature race win while sixteen-year-old Steven Howard  paced the field in the second go around.
Lee and Howard are in the perfect place at Oglethorpe Speedway Park.  The half mile historic speedway hosts the 2nd Annual Coca-Cola Young Guns Shoot-Out this weekend.  Howard will pilot his late model during the special Saturday night race featuring stock car drivers from all over the nation.  Lee will be looking on from the sidelines anxious to find someone to give him a chance behind the wheel of their stock car.
"There is some good talent at OSP in the go karts," said track promoter Ted Austad.  "Look at the talent that has already sprouted from the go kart series to the stock cars.  Steven Howard, Branden Yawn, Casey Barrow, Michael Slater are just a few of the guys that have moved up and are finding success."
Oglethorpe Speedway Park will host the 5th Annual Winternationals of Georgia this Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.  The event will include racing action in the Crate Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Championship Tour Modifieds and 440 Cars.  Saturday night's racing action will have the 2nd Annual Young Guns races join the full line-up of racing action.  Drivers aged 23 and younger will compete in front of professional team scouts and driver development coordinators while chasing the prestigious title of Young Guns champion.  Currently over 100 drivers from 23 states and Canada will be coming to the speedway for this special event.
The Go Kart Winter Shoot-Out Series will roll back into action on Saturday, February 18th before finishing up the season with a double points championship day on Saturday, February 25th.  More information can be obtained by contacting the speedway at 912-964-8200 or by visiting the speedway website at www.ospracing.net.
