Police Reports
|
Garden City
• An Officer stopped at a local convenience store to
“conduct a restroom break.” He was approached inside
by an employee who asked him to check on a car that had
been parked in the front lot since 5am. The Officer ran
the license plate through dispatch and found the car had
been reported stolen in Glynn County. (I’m gonna guess
the Officer didn’t want to put in his report that “I
stopped to take a leak....”)
• The same Officer also found a stolen Ford Escort at a
Garden City fast food business the day before.
• An Officer was doing a business check when he spotted
a car riding down the side street. The driver of the car
was a man that the Officer knows has a suspended license.
He pulled to the side of the road and got out of the car,
and the Officer called for him to walk over to where he
was. The man smiled at the Officer, then fled on foot. A
short time later, the man’s mother and sister arrived at
the car and wanted to know what was going on. The Officer
explained that the woman’s son had been driving while
suspended and fled on foot. He added that he could’t
release the car to them until the man turned himself
in. The women left in a huff, but not before advising that
they would be speaking to the Chief of Police first thing
the next morning. (Yeah, good luck with that!)
Port Wentworth
• An Officer responded to a construction site off of Hwy
21 at I-95 for a report of an injured person. The victim
had suffered a severe cut caused by a 14” diamond saw
blade. The Officer called for Port Wentworth and Pooler
Fire Departments to set up a secure area where a
helicopter arrived to fly the victim to Memorial Hospital.
No word on his condition at this time.
• An Officer was on her way to work when dispatch
advised to be on the lookout for a possible drunk driver
in a blue Camaro that had been all over the road on Hwy
21, turned onto Crossgate Road and then onto Turnberry
Street. The Officer found the Camaro now parked in a
driveway. She pulled a block away to see if the driver got
back into the car, and another car pulled alongside her.
This was the woman who’d originally called to report the
driver. She said she was stopped beside the car at a red
light, and noticed the woman drinking from a Smirnoff
bottle. When the light turned green, the woman quickly
accelerated, veering into her lane of traffic and nearly
sideswiping her car. As the woman approached Crossgate
Road, she nearly struck a man on a bicycle. She then
proceeded down the middle of Crossgate Road, ran the red
light at Hwy 25 and then turned onto Turnberry. About that
time, the Camaro began backing out of the driveway, and
the Officer made a traffic stop. The original driver was
now sitting in the back seat. The current driver was
arrested for driving while suspended. The original driver
was arrested for underage drinking and open container
violation. While arguing with the Officer, she admitted
she’d driven from Garden City, taking Hwy 21 and
Crossgate Road. She was then also charged with DUI and
taken to jail.
• An Officer was on Hwy 21 and noticed a southbound car
with no tail lights. He turned around to make a traffic
stop, but the driver, seeing the Officer turn around, also
made a U-turn and headed back northbound. The Officer got
behind him with his lights and siren activated, but the
driver refused to stop. A Garden City Officer notified the
Officer that the car was stolen. The driver finally pulled
to the side of the road, and he was immediately placed
under arrest for driving while suspended and theft by
bringing stolen property into the state.
• Around 1am, an Officer clocked a Springfield man in a
gray pickup at 70mph in a 55mph zone and made a traffic
stop. He finally asked if the man would submit to some
field sobriety tests, and the man replied, “No, ...you
got me. I drank too much.” He was taken to jail for DUI.
• An Officer stopped a Hilton Head man in a Jeep
Cherokee after seeing him run the red light at Hwy 21 adn
Crossgate Road. His K-9 walked around the Jeep and alerted
on the tailgate and rear window area. The man was soon
arrested for possession of marijuana.

Effingham County Sheriff’s Office
• A Guyton man told Deputies that as he was backing out of his driveway, he
noticed his Rototiller was missing from his backyard. The tiller is valued at
$450.
• An Eden man told Deputies his son was riding a four wheeler down a trail
behind his property when a man stepped out of the wood line and pointed a
rifle at him. His son turned around and returned home and told his father
about his. His father said he then walked down the trail, and the man again
stepped out of the woodline with his rifle. The man told him if he “came
down there, he would shoot him.” Deputies are investigating. (I’m gonna
bet this guy’s growin’ a little something down this trail and doesn’t
want anyone snooping around!)
• A Guyton city employee found that a man had rerouted his water line and
was receiving city water at no charge. The employee removed the water meter
and put a lock on it, and left a note for the homeowner to call City Hall.
When he returned, the lock had been cut off and the water line reconnected.
The employee removed the meter and replaced the lock, and left a note that if
the homeowner didn’t contact City Hall about his water service, the
Sheriff’s Department would be notified. When he followed up, the man had cut
the lock off again and reconnected his service. (Must not be any of that
treated Savannah River water!)
• The night before St. Patrick’s Day, a Bloomingdale Officer found a woman
parked in the middle of Hwy 80 near Ziegler Road. He contacted Effingham
Deputies and tried to speak with the woman driver. She complained that she
couldn’t get the car to go in reverse. The Officer found that the car was
turned off. She said she was trying to get to her house nearby. Deputies
arrived and the woman was arrested for DUI.
• A Deputy was on Midland Road around 4am the morning after St. Patrick’s
Day and observed as a black pickup ran the stop sign at Blue Jay Road. As he
pulled up to make a traffic stop, the truck backed into the intersection and
turned south on Blue Jay. The Deputy stopped the driver, and the Springfield
man was arrested for DUI-under 21 years of age.
• A Springfield woman told Deputies she arrived home around 11pm and went
inside and took a shower. When she got out, she discovered her ‘97 Chevy
Suburban was missing.
• Deputies responded to an abandoned residence where a woman complained that
her daughter was inside with a man. As they pulled up, one man exited the
residence and was stopped by one of the Deputies. Another man then walked out
and began walking away very quickly. The other Deputy stopped that man, but he
became very agitated, insisting that the Deputy had no right to stop him. The
Deputy noticed the odor of alcohol on the young man’s breath and decided he
needed to pat the man down for weapons. The man refused to let the Deputy pat
him down. He pulled away and turned to run, and the Deputy put him on the
ground. He then placed the man under arrest for underage drinking and
obstruction.
• A man told Deputies that there were seven dogs in a pen located in a field
behind his residence. He told them who the hunting dogs belonged to, adding
that he’d gone out and fed the dogs after he found them malnourished. One
dog was in such bad shape that it couldn’t stand up on it’s own. The
Deputies spoke to the dogs’ owner, who said he’d been on vacation, adding
that he’d fed them about two weeks ago. All seven dogs were taken to Animal
Control, and the man was taken to jail on charges of cruelty to animals.
(I’m fine with that, as long as they remember to give this guy something to
eat every couple of weeks!)
• Deputies responded to a domestic dispute that began when a man insisted
his wife fix him something for supper. While the Deputy was trying to get both
sides of the story, he told the man to be quiet and stand by the refrigerator
while he spoke with the man’s wife. The man then took an offensive stance
like he was going to hit or push the Deputy. The man ended up going to jail
for disorderly conduct and obstruction.
• A Garden City Officer was on his way home, near Midland Road and Hwy 17,
when he spotted two vehicles pulled to the side of the road and two men
fighting. As Deputies arrived, one man explained that he was taking his
babysitter and her sister home when he noticed he was being followed by a
white Ford pickup. The pickup then passed him and slammed on brakes, causing
the man to pull to the side of the road. The other driver then ran up to him
and punched him in the nose. The other man admitted that was all true, adding
that he thought his girlfriend was cheating on him. He was then taken to jail
on charges of simple battery and aggressive driving. (I could write a country
song out of this one!)
• A Deputy responded to an Eden residence and saw a man waving for him from
the front porch. He walked up and the man showed him a man who was “scared
for his life” that had jumped out of a car on the road. The man explained
that the woman who was driving had nearly struck three or four cars head
on, and he asked her to slow down for just a moment. When she did, he took
advantage of the opportunity and jumped from the moving vehicle. The Deputy
then walked over to the woman in the car, and she said she’d been yelling
for the man for about thirty minutes. The Deputy shined his flashlight into
her car and noticed several wine coolers in the floorboard. She failed a field
sobriety test and was arrested for DUI and open container. The man refused
treatment by EMS for the knot on his head and the cuts on his arm. (I get
scared when my wife’s driving, but not enough to make me jump out the car!)
Pooler
• A Guyton man was attempting to put his coins into the car wash
machine and dropped some of them on the ground. He thought he’d put his car
in park, but it was actually in reverse. As the car rolled backward, his door
began brushing against the brick base of the money machine. He went to grab
and close the door, but got his hand wedged between the door and the machine,
leaving him with several lacerations and probably a broken thumb. An employee
arrived for work and heard the man calling for help and was able to free the
man’s hand. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment.
• A bank employee who reads Police Reports in a local, and pretty darn good,
newspaper, became concerned over two men who were cashing $900 in quarters at
the bank. Officers arrived and took information from the men, who were
released from the scene with their money. (That’s good community policing! I
hope everyone will keep their eyes open for some of the crooks we write
about!)
• A man told Officers he went to his storage shed to charge the battery on
his lawn tractor, and found it had been stolen.
• A man walked out to his truck to go to work and found someone had broken
into it and stolen a $3500 computer that belongs to the company he works for.
He’s unsure if the doors were locked or not.
• Officers responded to I-16 where a Douglas man had run off the road. He
was arrested for DUI and refused the state administered test.
• An anonymous caller complained about an intoxicated man walking through
their backyard. Officers arrived and the man admitted that he’d walked
through several backyards. He said he thought they were all common ground
areas, open to anyone to walk through. The Officer briefly explained the
concept of private property, and the man promised to call the next time he
found someone walking through his back yard!
• A man happened to be outside between 7:30am and 8am when a Laidlaw school
bus attempted to make a turn onto Mell Street. The man said the driver struck
a fence, a street sign, and a survey marker, and the driver never stopped.
(Why, for goodness sakes, do we still have Laidlaw running our school
buses???)
• Police responded to a residential neighborhood where a man told them
he’d just picked his kids up from the residential childcare business. He
said a woman who lives nearby came out in just a short halter top, naked from
the waist down, and was taking pictures of his car parked in the street. The
Officers flipped coin to see who got to go and speak with the woman. The
winner said the woman and her husband denied that she was naked. The woman
said she taking photos of the illegally parked cars to present to City
Council. (You can bet I’ll be at the next Pooler City Council meeting!)
• A Pooler man told Officers he’d just discovered that someone had used
his credit card number to charge $1,031 on his account payable to Western
Union. The man says he still has his card with him and that he’s never done
any business with Western Union. He’s cancelled his card to prevent further
loss.
• The manager of a fast food business told Officers she was suspicious of a
red Isuzu pickup that had been parked behind the business for nearly three
hours. The truck pulled away just before the Officers arrived, but she pointed
it out as it passed on the street behind the business. The Officers then made
a traffic stop, and the driver said he’d been parked there waiting on his
girlfriend to get off work. The Officers asked for his girlfriend’s name,
and he could only give a first name. One said he’d go confirm the man’s
story, and then he admitted he didn’t have a girlfriend and couldn’t
explain why he was parked behind the restaurant for so long. One Officer
looked into the cab of his pickup while the driver’s side window was
partially rolled down, and spotted a small baggie with crack cocaine in the
floorboard. The man was arrested on charges of possession of controlled
substances at that point.
Bryan County Sheriff’s Office
• A woman told Deputies she was outside doing some yard work when she
decided to take a break and play with her kids. That’s when she noticed her
neighbor had climbed into his children’s tree house and was watching her.
She said that made her pretty uncomfortable, and she wanted a report on file.
(I did a little yard work last week and noticed all of my neighbors had come
outside and were looking at me. I think they were all thinking “My God,
he’s actually doing something with his yard!”)
• While on patrol at 2am, a Deputy spotted a Nissan pickup on Hwy 17 without
it’s headlights and tail lights on. The Deputy made a traffic stop, and the
Richmond Hill man was arrested for DUI.
• A woman called Deputies who showed up to find her holding her Chihuahua in
her arms wrapped in a towel. The dog had been attacked, for a second time, by
a neighbor’s bulldog. The bulldog’s owner agreed to pay the vet’s bill
for the woman, and she was cited for dog at large charges.
• A Deputy clocked a Ford Crown Victoria at 70mph in a 55mph zone of Hwy 17.
The driver of the Ford pulled into a fast food business, apparently looking
for a place to pull over for the Officer. But when he reached the back of the
parking lot, he layed drag accelerating back through the lot to the highway.
The Deputy stayed right behind him with his lights flashing and siren
activated. The driver of the Ford then got into heavy traffic on Hwy 17 near
I-95, at one point straddling the centerline and driving through the stopped
vehicles. At a traffic light intersection, he struck another car, lost control
of the car and ended up in the ditch. The driver got out and attempted to flee
on foot, but only fell in the ditch where he was apprehended. “I made a
mistake,” the man told the Deputy. He admitted his license was suspended,
and dispatch advised that there were two warrants for his arrest from other
counties. He was taken to St. Joseph’s for a fractured vertebra. He was
cited for DUI Refusal, reckless driving, driving while suspended, open
container, and fleeing to elude, and was transferred to Memorial Hospital.
He’ll be picked up and taken to jail once he receives his medical clearance.
Bloomingdale
• Officers responded to a domestic dispute call around 2am. A woman told
them she walked by while her boyfriend was on the phone and heard him say
“Hey baby” to whoever he was talking to. She then questioned him about who
he was on the phone with, and the man replied “My friend Adam.” She
continued questioning him and finally learned it was an ex-girlfriend. The
couple decided to sleep in different rooms for the night. (Sounds like it
coulda been worse. I mean, what if he really had been talking to Adam?)
• A man told as Officer that he was sitting in his living room watching TV
around 9:30pm with his front door open when a man walked inside his home. He
asked the man what he was doing, and the man said he was just going to use the
bathroom. The man and his son got the man outside the house, but didn’t
notify Police until the next day.
• Around 2:20am, an Officer was eastbound on Hwy 80 when a car approached
from behind him with it’s bright lights on. The Officer waited until the
driver passed him, then made a traffic stop. The Savannah man couldn’t
produce a driver’s license, so the Officer ran his name through dispatch and
found he was driving while suspended. The man also had a warrant for his
arrest from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department. (And not bright enough
to dim his bright lights while behind a Police Officer! Geez!)
• Around 3:30am, an Officer was behind another car southbound on
Bloomingdale Road that was weaving across the lane lines. He made a traffic
stop, and a South Carolina man told him he was lost and trying to get back to
Abercorn Street. He found his way to the Chatham County Detention Center on
charges of DUI instead.
• A man reported that his $16,000 John Deere tractor and his $1000 flat bed
trailer had been removed from his Ford pickup and stolen. Witnesses last saw
it being towed behind a white pickup towards I-16.
• A man drove his tractor trailer to the Police Department to pay a traffic
fine, and was arrested for driving while suspended.
• An Officer noticed a car weaving ahead of him on I-16 westbound, and made
a traffic stop. He noticed the odor of alcohol coming from the car when he
asked for the Rincon woman’s license. He also noticed that the woman
couldn’t do but one thing at a time, stopping her search for her
driver’s license while answering questions he’d ask. She was ultimately
arrested for DUI.
• An Officer made a traffic stop on a Statesboro man on St. Patrick’s Day
night after seeing the man weaving while westbound on I-16. The man was then
arrested for driving while suspended and for DUI. His female passenger was
arrested for possession of marijuana.
• An Officer was running stationary radar near the school zone on Pine
Street when he clocked a Bloomingdale man at 35mph in the 25mph zone. The man
was then arrested for driving while suspended.
• A man went into the Police Department to file a complaint. He explained
that he’d turned his van in to a Garden City Title Pawn business back in
July of 2004. He left his license platee on the back. He said that since that
time, he’d received several notices from the City of Savannah Parking
Services Division about his tag being used on different vehicles, and accruing
over $114 in fines.
