Southbridge 5K Fun Run on November 4 to Support
Independent Living
Southbridge, a premier golf and spa community in west
Chatham County, will host a 5K Fun Run on Saturday,
November 4 at 9:30 a.m. to support Living Independence
for Everyone (LIFE), a Savannah- based, non-profit
organization which provides services for people of all
ages and all disabilities.
This non-profit works with our friends, relatives,
neighbors and co-workers in our community,? said Kara
Kavanagh, a Southbridge resident who is organizing the
event. We want local residents to show their community
support and sponsor, participate or donate to support
this life-changing organization.
Money raised from the event, which is open to the
public, will help dozens of individuals receive adaptive
equipment and assistive devices that will allow them to
live independently. LIFE's Home Modification Program
helps provide individuals with wider doorways, roll in
showers, lift chairs, ramps, grab bars and hand rails.
These minor changes often determine whether a disabled
individual can live independently or must go to a
nursing or group home.
This is a great event for a great cause, said Sue
Onofrio, director of marketing at Southbridge. ?We hope
to make this 5K Fun Run an annual tradition at
Southbridge.?
The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a Kiddie Run for
children ages 10 and younger at the Grand Lake Lodge and
Spa. The 5K Fun Run starts at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $5
for children and $15 for adults and includes a T-shirt.
Southbridge is looking for volunteers to help out
before, during and after the event. Sponsorships are
also available. To sponsor, volunteer, or donate prizes
for 5K Fun Run, please call the Southbridge office at
(912) 651-5400 or e-mail Kara Kavanagh at KaraKav@yahoo.com

Softball... Groves win region title!
First-year Coach Chuck Smith inherited a talented group of softball players
from Groves' Athletic Director Kevin Brown. The change in coaches didn't slow
down the Rebels (15-5, 10-1) one iota as it went on to capture its fourth
region crown in the last five years.
The Rebels blanked Jenkins 4-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Tiffany Munn.
The Warriors contributed to their own demise by committing four errors, which
accounted for three unearned runs in the defeat. Bailey Bazemore doubled in
the only earned run for Groves.
The Rebels won the outright title as Camden County defeated Bradwell, which
gave Groves the clear-cut title for Region 3-AAAAA.
South Effingham, which boasts the best record in the area, blew out Liberty
County enroute to the top-seed in the upcoming Region 3-AAA tournament. The
Mustangs (27-2, 10-0) limited the Panthers to only one hit, while scoring 11
runs and getting 15 hits on its way to an 11-0 victory. It was the
third-straight season in which South Effingham has finished region play
undefeated.
Sara Faircloth won her ninth game of the season and is the only pitcher on the
Mustang staff to suffer losses this season. The Mustangs will host Washington
County at 2 p.m. on Friday to determine which team advances to the state
tournament.
Savannah Christian added to the woes of McIntosh Academy as the Red Raiders
easily won 18-0 in the Mercy Rule shortened game. Emily Corish (17-5) picked
up the win for SCPS (17-5, 11-3). The loss for McIntosh was its 23rd of the
season, while the team went 0-14 in Region-2-AA action.
Madelyn Kessler had two hits and drove in three runs. Corish not only pitched
a one-hitter, but went 3-3 at the plate and drove in three runs to help her
own cause.
Volleyball
Effingham County defeated a highly-touted Savannah Arts Academy volleyball
team, only to turn around and lose to cross-town rival South Effingham County
in a tri-team volleyball match on Tuesday. In the first game, the Rebels
Jennifer Smith led her team with 10 kills, while Becca Rawski had 10 assist.
In the nightcap, Smith came up with only three kills.
Football
The Groves Rebels will try to pick up its second straight win against the
Beach High Bulldogs on Friday at Westside Stadium in Garden City. The Rebels,
fresh off a victory over Windsor Forest on last Friday, will be trying to stop
the throwing of Beach senior quarterback Marquis Cummings.
According to Beach Coach Ulysses Hawthorne, the 6-foot-7 inch Cummings is the
best quarterback in the Region.
Over in Richmond Hill this weekend, South Effingham will try to rebound from
its shellacking by Washington County last week. The Wildcats will try to
derail the Mustangs hope of picking up another win in Region 3-AAA play.
Football schedule
Beach versus Groves @ Westside Stadium, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
South Effingham @ Richmond Hill, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Jamie Lindley (14) is the lead blocker for Brandon Sumner (35) during the
Brantley County/SCPS game on Friday.
SAVANNAH CHRISTIAN RAIDERS DEFEAT BRANTLEY COUNTY
Savannah Christian won a close one against a tough Brantley County team 28-21
on Friday night at Westside stadium.? The game was almost postponed due to bad
weather and high winds.
Russell DeMasi, the starting Raider quarterback, was sidelined for the first
half, forcing back up quarterback Caleb Wynn into the starting position.?
Caleb performed well, leading the Raiders to only a 7-6 half-time deficit with
no miscues.? The Raiders scored on their first possession, which used up eight
minutes of the first quarter, and kept the dominant spread offense of the
Herons off the field.? Capping the 67 yard drive was a 7 yard run by David
Butler.? Brantley County scored on their first possession as well, with a 2
yard run by Jay Edwards, followed by the PAT by Austin Lee.
Demasi started the second half and on the second play from scrimmage hooked up
with Tyler Sumner for a 59 yard touchdown.? DeMasi again connected with Sumner
for the 2 point conversion to tie the score.? Following a successful onside
kick by Jamie Lindley, the Raiders took only 6 plays to go ahead of the Herons
21-14, completed with a 3 yard run by DeMasi with PAT by Lindley.?
The Raiders held the Herons on their next possession, but the ball struck a
blocker in the back of the leg and the Herons recovered on the SCPS 48.?
Brantley scoring on a 5 yard run by Adriane McMillian and a 21 yard pass from
Stephen Prevatt to Randy Clark, with PAT after each by Lee.? In the fourth
quarter, the Raiders scored for the final time with a 4 yard run by Butler and
PAT by Lindley.?
Chris Barnwell lead the offense of the Raiders with 30 carries for 149 yards.?
Butler had 11 carries for 76 yards and DeMasi had 4 carries for 13 yards and
one touchdown.? Barnwell and Caleb Wynn received offensive team awards for the
week and Adam Radford received special team honors.
Keeping the offense of the Herons off of the field was a monumental task for
the Raiders defense.? Tyler Sumner lead the defense with 13 tackles and 3
interceptions, receiving Savannah Morning News? defensive leader honors and
Player of the Week honors.? Kevin McCarthy had 9 tackles, with Lindley and
Jordan Hill each adding 6 1/2.?? The Savannah Christian Raiders will face
number one ranked Charlton County in Folkston Friday night at 7:30.
OUTDOOR TRUTHS
(Editor's Note: Outdoor Truths is a weekly sportsman's article that appears in
newspapers and regional magazines across 13 states in the South, and Midwest.
It is a blend of observations and experiences that have come over time from
being in God's great outdoors. We're proud to offer this column for the
outdoor sportsmen in our area.)
I was determined to locate a good place to put my tree stand, away from any
other hunter.
I was hunting on private property but others hunt there as well. It's large
enough for several people, but I wanted to make sure that I was far off the
beaten path. I was willing to climb, crawl, and creep until I had found my
?promised land.?
I loaded my lock-on tree stand and my stacking sticks on my back and headed up
the mountain. The first 300 yards was almost straight up the hill, with an
occasional bend. I knew that most hunters would be unwilling even to go to
these extremes. But I was not satisfied.
After a few more turns, I was standing in a ?saddle? that was an obvious, deer
travel, corridor. I studied the situation a few minutes. (I really just needed
to rest!) But after some soul-searching, I determined I needed to go a little
farther, around the next hollow. I wanted to be sure that I would be alone.
By now, my shirt was soaking wet and my legs were feeling the extra weight of
the tree stand. I moved about 50 yards below a thicket, just above the crest
of the hill. When I made it to the other side, I noticed a nice flat. I weaved
my way through the mountain laurel until I reached the center of that small
flat that was loaded with plenty of signs, of deer.
I made it! I knew that I was at a place that no hunter had ever been. Heck, I
doubt if even ole Daniel Boone himself had ever set foot on this virgin
territory.
I quickly located a perfect tree where my stand would go. I set the stand up,
put the stacking sticks together, and strapped everything snuggly to the tree.
I climbed up, looked around, and noticed an odd shape about 40 yards away. You
guessed it.. another tree stand! I wished I had brought my chain saw!
Sometimes in our lives we think that we too are at a place where no one has
ever been. We think that we are alone in our situation or circumstance. We
feel that nobody has ever faced the trouble we are now facing.
The fact is, there is nothing new. Someone else has been where you're at.
But our consolation is not in the knowledge that someone else has walked in
our shoes, but our consolation and comfort is in knowing that if we'll look
around, we'll find the Lord has already been there, just waiting for us to
arrive.
