Obituaries

Earl J. Pack, Sr.
Earl J. Pack, Sr., 79, or Guyton, died Sunday, May 6, 2007, at the Savannah Hospice Home following a brief illness. He was he son of the late John Franklin and Edith Carver Pack. He was born in Copper Hill, Ten. On November 27, 1927 and was a retired Welder / Maintenance worker from Potlatch Paper Company in Ark. He was a member of the Hwy 30 Church of Christ, and a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous and performed the prison ministry at the Dumas State prison for several years.
Survivors include: A sister, Lillian Conner of Guyton, Ga. Three sons, Earl J. Pack, Jr. of Newport, Wa; Larry C. Pack of Ellabell, Ga; Marcus D. Pack of Rentz, Ga. Three daughters, Earline F. Woods of Bluffton, SC; Sheari D. Spurlock of Homosassa, Fl; Carol M. Sisak of New Kensington, Pa; 29 Grandchildren, 20 Great-Grandchildren, 1 Great-Great-Granddaughter, a number of beloved nieces and nephews, Christian brothers and sisters and his AA Family. A memorial service will be at a later date. Remembrances can be sent to the Hwy 30 Church of Christ, Building Fund, 1952 Noel C. Conaway Rd., Guyton, Ga 31312.

Warren O. Rahn
Guyton - Warren O. Rahn, 84, died Thursday, May 10, 2007 at Effingham Extended Care.
The Effingham County native was a member of New Providence Baptist Church. He was a retired Electrician and worked with his wife at Rahn’s Fashion. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he received the Purple Heart.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jerry Scott of Springfield; 2 granddaughters, Alicia Brinson and Joseph of Hodgeville and Lori Hood and Tim of Springfield; 5 great-grandchildren, Lyndsey, McKenzie, and Kristen Brinson, Tyler Hood, and Taylor Smith; sister, Arlene Barner of Garden City; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Providence Baptist Church.
Interment was in the Guyton Cemetery.
Remembrances may be given to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, GA 31416.

John Thomas Stewart
John Thomas Stewart, 85 of Savannah passed away peacefully on Friday May 11, 2007 at his residence under the care of Hospice Savannah Inc. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lillian Williams Stewart.
John was born and raised in Savannah and was a retired welder from Chatham Steel after 19 years of service, a member of the Jazz Club at the Rose of Sharon and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He is survived by 2 daughters; Kathy Stewart, Elizabeth Walthour both of Hinesville, GA; a brother, James Jackson of Savannah, Ga. 4 grandchildren, John, Joseph Stewart, Jontae White, Jazaria Walthour.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday May 18 in the chapel of Fairhaven Funeral Home with Prophet Walter Wright, (nephew of the deceased) will officiate.
Burial: Miles Branch Church Cemetery in Blitchton.
Fairhaven Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of all arrangements.

Mr. Anthony Gene Smiley
Savannah-Mr. Anthony Gene Smiley, 49, died on Monday, May 14, 2007 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
The Chatham County native was a Georgia Bulldog Fan and he enjoyed playing darts, basketball and dancing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene R. and Betty Lou Smiley.
Survivors include his sisters, Lisa Michelle Howe of Pooler and Pamela Cannon of Sylvania and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the chapel of the funeral home with burial  at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Mr. Ralph David George
December 31, 1924 - May 15, 2007
Garden City-Mr. Ralph George, 82, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and 
great-great-grandfather, slipped away into eternal peace on Tuesday, May 15, 2007.
He was born on December 31, 1924 to the late Tom E. George and Irene Murray George in Hot Springs, Arkansas. At the age of 17, he entered the Marine Corps where he remained for fifteen years. After his discharge as a Technical SGT. and settling in West Savannah, he started working for Smith and Kelly in 1957, and many other shipping companies. He was a member of ILA 1475 for over forty years and retired in 1998. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mattie Lou, his sons, Tommie Eugene, Kenneth Clark, and Truitt Jordan; grandsons, Greg Anderson; great-grandson, Andrew Mueller, and his sister, Jean Nichols.
He leaves to cherish his memories, six favorite daughters, Katha Moore of Bloomingdale, Karen & Jay Urban of Ladson, South Carolina, Marianne & Timmy Smith of Richmond Hill, Mary Lou & Shannon Gillis of Richmond Hill, Jean & Dan Hartley of Guyton and Judy & Frankie Crosby of Richmond Hill; grandchildren, Simone, Shannon, Stacey, Stephanie, Gloria, David and Robert, Jennifer and Jessica, Dean, Brenda, Bradley and Jill; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Sierra, Summer, Selena, Alexis, Zach, Elizabeth, Trey, Andrew, Taylor, T.J., Justin, Noah and Rhett, Cherie, Jason, Dixie, Amber, Emaline, Karmin and Kristin; and great-great-grandchildren, Tyler and Dixie Louise.
Funeral: 2 p.m. on Friday in the chapel of the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons, great-grandsons and sons-in-law. Honorary Pallbearers will be neighbors and former neighbors of his Azalea Avenue neighborhood where he resided for over 45 years. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery on Dean Forest Road with Military Honors.

Mrs. Mary E. Romano
Guyton-Mrs. Mary E. Romano, 60, died on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at Candler Hospital.
Mrs. Romano was born in Metter and had lived in Effingham County for a number of years. She was a member of LifeSpring Worship Center where she had formerly been employed. She enjoyed cooking, working crossword puzzles and being in the outdoors. She was preceded in death by three sons, Michael, Mark and Matthew Romano.
Survivors include her husband, Maurice Anthony Romano of Guyton; her children, Michelle Lynn Stanley & Billy of Pooler, Melissa Marie Wilson & Buckwheat of Guyton, Gary Lee Romano & Donna of Ellabell, Gregory Scott Romano of Guyton and Staci Louise Moore & Shawn of Guyton; fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Arlita & Larry Gooding of Omaha, Nebraska; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray & Jeanelle Hollingsworth of Guyton and Buddy & Emily Hollingsworth of Guyton and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at Effingham Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Jewell Smith Slater

Faulkville. Mrs. Jewell S. Slater, widow of Leaston Nathaniel Slater, died Monday, May 7, 2007, at Hospice Savannah.
She was born in Ludowici, Georgia on July 6, 1918 to Arthur and Corinne Smith. She was a longtime, faithful member of Faulkville Baptist Church. Over the years, she served in different capacities at her Church. She was an avid fisherman and a longtime member of Cuyler Hunting Club.
She is survived by five daughters, Jeanette and Ed Rouse of Tallahassee, Florida; Faye and Sonny Hodges of Port Wentworth, Georgia; Bea and Fritz Nitz of Rincon, Georgia; Sue Stafford of Sylvania, Georgia; Bobbie and W.H. Teague of Smyrna, Georgia; and special "nephew-son", James Madison and Bonnie Smith. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, fifteen great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Dunham of Hinesville, Georgia; one brother, Thomas Monroe and Ora Smith of Lakeland, Florida, a number of nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
Funeral Services were held in the chapel of the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Sam Self officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery on Dean Forest Road.
Pallbearers were Parker Dunham, Jody Dunham, Langston Dunham, Dale Smith, Garrett Smith, Omer Steedley, David Steedley, and Jeffrey Slater. Honorary Pallbearers were the Deacons and the Young At Heart from Faulkville Baptist Church, Bobby Norton, and Micky Clark.
