Letters to the Editor

Regarding Last Week’s Discussion of Presidential Candidates....
Dear Editor,
After reading your brief editorials on the potential presidential candidates for 2008, I was dismayed to find that you did not mention Dr. Ron Paul who is one of the candidates running for the Republican party.
Although not as popular as some of the others, Dr. Paul has made a tremendous impact on many Americans. He leads the Republican party for most money raised in the 4th quarter, having raised 6.4 million dollars in one day from over 50,000 supporters. This broke the record for most money ever raised in a day by a presidential candidate. And
as the Iowa polls revealed, he ranked higher than that of Mayor Rudolph Guiliani who has received far more media attention that that of Dr. Paul.
This isn't to endorse Ron Paul as a specific candidate, I just hope the omission of his name wasn't merely based on a personal bias or an intentional censorship. To say that he isn't relevant in comparison to the other candidates you mentioned is absurd. He has an abundance of supporters that I'm sure were disappointed at this as well.

Sincerely,
Lyric Cross
Pooler

Editor’s Note: I wish that you had pointed out that I left out the name of Fred Thompson, who is actually my preferred choice for the Republican nomination. He just doesn’t seem to want the position. He hasn’t campaigned very hard, and on several occassions, he’s come off as just a mean old man.
I am very thankful that you’ve gotten involved in politics and I respect your enthusiasm for the candidacy of Ron Paul. [Lyric is my oldest step daughter.] But you and the other Pauliacs out there need to take a second look at this Libertarian’s agenda. During the New Hampshire debate last Saturday night, he talked about withdrawing our troops, not just from Iraq, but from Saudi Arabia, Korea, Dubai, and one would assume Japan, Germany and every other base not in the United States. I think that would ultimately be disastrous for, not just us, but for the entire world.
With greatness comes great responsibility. God has blessed our country tremendously, and has made us the greatest nation on Earth. It’s our duty to help other countries, and other people’s in their struggles for freedom. Ron Paul would pursue a course of isolationism for America that would not be in anyone’s best interests.
I will give him and his staff credit for using the internet better than the other candidates and building a grassroots campaign with a very limited budget. But I believe there’s not much substance to his positions when you thoroughly evaluate them.

Regarding The Kindness Of Our Community....
Dear Editor,
In the early morning hours of Friday, January 4th, my family suffered a loss. Sadie, our small lab mix was hit by a car and was given to heaven.
Sadie had been missing since New Year’s Eve from our Goshen Hills neighborhood. She was extremely scared by the fireworks, jumped the fence and couldn’t find her way back home. During our search, we distributed hundreds of flyers, placed an ad in the Spirit and placed about a dozen signs along Goshen, McCall and Hodgeville Roads. Our signs read, “Lost Dog. Small Black Lab with red collar.” We had an outpouring of phone calls regarding Sadie and a few spottings.
Although Sadie is no longer with us, I wanted to say, “Thank You,” to everyone who called, who helped search and who even just had good thoughts for Sadie’s return. It seemed that many times we were so close to finding our wonderful 8-year old crazy-puppy and we wouldn’t have come so close without the help of the community. Please always remember that a dog wandering the streets may need you to stop and
help them home. It is amazing just how much a dog can touch our hearts and bring so much joy during life yet so much sadness in passing.

Sincerely,
Jen and Steve Ranicki

Regarding The Kindness Of Our Community During A Difficult Loss....
Dear Editor,
My family has lived in the Pooler area for over 30 years. I knew our town was filled with big hearts and joined together when need be, and our tragedy proved how great Pooler is.
A few days ago we lost our son in a car accident. My family would like to thank the Pooler residents and surrounding area for their generosity and outpouring of support. I would also like to thank my local Police department, who assited us the past few days. And to City Hall, you helped my husband and I in ways only you know.
Again to my community and the many friends of Jonathan and his family. Your thought, prayers and support during this time of sorrow and loss are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
The Vadi Family
Pooler
