Prayer For This Week...
"Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness
and to seek your direction and guidance." "We know Your Word says,
"Woe to those who call evil good," but that is exactly what we have
done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have
rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn
and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it
justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called
it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics.
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We
have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it
freedom of expression. We have ridiculed t he time-honored values of
our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and
know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free. Amen!"

A Spirit of Excellence
Too often we seek to do just enough to get by within our daily
lives. The question is often asked, “What do I have to do?” Many are
willing to give only the least amount of time and effort required. Is
this really the way to excel and bring honor to the Lord Jesus Christ?
Jesus speaking in Matthew 5:41 declared, “And whosoever shall compel
thee to go a mile, go with him two.”
Are you a one-miler or a two-miler? There are people who wish to
simply do what is expected of them and no more. The norm of their
life is to do only what they have to do. These people must be
compelled into service. Such service will not honor the Lord or the
one who is serving.
Praise God – there are those who are willing to do more than what is
expected. There are people who seek to do the exceptional. The norm
is not good enough for these people. They are driven by a spirit of
excellence. They want to be their best and do their best for their Lord.
Can one really honor God without being driven by a spirit of
excellence? Jesus would have us begin with what is expected and move
beyond to that which is exceptional. It could be that the world does
not notice the church simply due to the fact that too many Christians
do just the bare minimum. No one notices these kinds of people.
However, let someone move beyond the norm and that person will most
certainly make a mark upon those who are touched by such action.
The church needs “two-mile” people. Might this be the year that you
would desire to move beyond doing your duty and serve out of a sense
of devotion to our Lord? Ask not what you have to do but rather ask
what you might be able to do. Serving Jesus is really a privilege and
an honor.
A successful businessman was asked the secret of his success to
which he answered, “I do what I need to do and then some!”

This Message brought to you by Pastor David C. Laughner, Chapel-by-
the-Sea Baptist Church on Tybee Island.

MY ANSWER
By Billy Graham

Q: Doesn't the Bible teach that God is the father of the whole human
race? And if that's the case, doesn't that mean that everyone will go
to heaven when they die, no matter who they are, since we are all
God's children? - W.R.

A: Yes, the Bible does say God is our Father - and the reason is
because He created us and gave us life. We aren't here by chance or
by accident; we are here because God made us and put us here. The
Bible says, "There is but one God, the Father, from whom all things
came" (1 Corinthians 8:6).
But the Bible also tells us that something very devastating has
happened: We have rebelled against Him and renounced our relationship
with Him. Just as a child can rebel against his parents - turning
against them and renouncing his place in the family - so we have
turned against God and renounced our place in His family. This is why
we need to be reconciled with God, for if we aren't, we will remain
separated from Him after death.
But how can we be reconciled with God? We have only one hope - and
that is if God provides the way. And that is what He did by sending
His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. The baby whose birth we
celebrated only a short time ago grew up to become God's appointed
means of salvation. The Bible says Christ "is able to save completely
those who come to God through him, because he always lives to
intercede for them" (Hebrews 7:25).
Don't delay, but confess your sins to God and ask Christ to forgive
and save you. The Bible says, "To all who received him, to those who
believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of
God" (John 1:12). Become God's child by giving your life to Him.
